This is totally a lie because God do not wage war on anyone. Satan mentions that he will fight again with more power and with the help of the other fallen angles and will definitely win this time. He says that God waged a war against him and the fallen angels and defeated them. Satan appeared as a big liar in this epic because he told some big lies to hide the shame of his defeat and to gain his glory again. Devil is blaming God only to hide his defeat and is saying that God still concealed his strength. He is the creator, and the rest is his creation. Everyone knows that God is Almighty and he is above everyone in power in every aspect. This is because God did not hide his power. He is manipulating the fact to gain sympathy. This might be the misconception of Satan, but reality is that he is once again trying to avoid his defeat. Satan also says that God did not reveal his power before that war with him and his army. Referring to God who is Monarch of the heaven. “But he who reigns Monarch in Heav’n, till then as one secure Sat on his Throne”, In one other place, Satan says that God enjoyed secured monarchy in heaven until that war was pledged against him. We can say that this is the preconceived notion of Satan which he is using to motivate the fallen angles for war. Satan thinks that the majority of angles in the heaven are now fallen and this majority is that much bigger that their expulsion caused half of heaven to vacant. Satan’s Misconception:ĭespite of being a very knowledgeable, Satan has some misconception in his mind. In other words, we can say that these are his tactics to gain sympathy of his audience. Is acting weak just to gain the sympathy of the fallen angles and this shows his bad mindset that he acted against his words to achieve his goal. Here is also a controversy in his action and words because once he said that to be weak is suffering and he despised suffering and now his action is totally different. He was doing this to grab the attention and gain the sympathy of the fallen angles that he is really felling sad for them because of their fall from the lavish position in the heaven to the pit of the hell just because of him. Tears started rolling down from his eyes. He tried three times to start his speech but failed and did not utter even a single word. Feigned Character of Satan:īefore starting his 5 th speech, Satan pretended to cry. He is only focusing on taking revenge rather than repenting on his doing. This behavior clearly shows his stubbornness and pride. Here it is also very difficult to understand the character of Satan because on one side he is motivating the fallen angles to fight against God and on other hand he is admiring the matchless power of Almighty. As he knows only God has the power to defeat fallen angles. No one has power to fight against you or can defeat you except the Almighty. You are the multitude of holy angles, and your power is matchless. “O Myriads of immortal Spirits, O Powers Matchless” Satan is acting like a Leader of the rebel angles and is motivating them to unite their powers for war. Some characteristics of Satan’s character are listed below from his 5 th speech. That is why the character of Satan is very difficult and is not easy to understand. All the rebel angels cannot defeat Him but he is preparing to fight. On the other hand, he knows that God is very powerful. Satan manipulates the facts, which is the basic characteristic of his character, and even lies just to reunite the angles to take revenge of his suffering and betrayal. Now in the 5 th speech, Satan is again going to address the fallen angels and this speech is quiet emotional speech because Satan is making the fallen angles realize that how much powerful they are and what they can do if the reunite their powers. In the 4 th speech, Satan addressed the fallen angles that is they do not get up then God and angles will take benefit of it and will further take them down. Being the leader, he is motivator and use powerful words to lead his army. This character’s main purpose is to fight against the absolute power. Somewhere, he is a leader, and at some places his pride, misconception and ignorance came across while talking about revenge. He is not only cunning and deceptive: he is also able to motivate the rebel angels to continue in the rebellion after their agonizing defeat in the Angelic War against God. His persuasive powers are evident throughout the book. The character of Satan is powerful and charismatic.
